Debate looks a little different when virtual but is a wonderful opportunity that has been able to continue in full force online! This fall during Debate Club, students will learn basic debate skills, forms of persuasion, and practice critical thinking on a series of complex topics. Students will participate in a form of Congressional debate, adapted for the virtual format. Here is the National Speech and Debate Association's explanation of what Congressional debate is: "A simulation of the U.S. legislative process, students generate a series of bills and resolutions for debate in Congressional Debate. Debaters alternate delivering speeches for and against the topic in a group setting. An elected student serves as a presiding officer to ensure debate flows smoothly. Students are assessed on their research, argumentation, and delivery skills, as well as their knowledge and use of parliamentary procedure." Join fellow Westland students and veteran Debate Instructor, Peri Kirkpatrick, for some fun during this virtual Debate Club!
